The London Cruise Terminal is hosting a community open weekend on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th June when visitors to the historic Cruise Terminal will be able to view the memorial tablets dedicated to the members of staff of the Port of London Authority who lost their lives in the Great War (1914 – 1918).  The two marble tablets inscribed with the names of those who fell are set into the walls of the eastern end of the main hall in the London Cruise Terminal.

Decorations for distinguished service were awarded to no fewer than 119 members of staff, including two Victoria Crosses, one French Medaille Militaire, one Russian Medal of St George, one Russian Medal for Zeal and two Italian Medals for Valour.

Sponsored by the Port of Tilbury and Port of London Authority, the London Cruise Terminal will be open on both days from 10 am until 4 pm when there will also be opportunities to take open top bus tours of the Port.

Essex Record Office will be displaying a timeline of maps of the area showing how Tilbury has developed over the centuries, illustrated with prints and other documents from their archive collections.

Thurrock Heritage Officer, Jonathan Catton, will be giving history talks on Tilbury’s involvement in the Great War.   Volunteers from Tilbury Riverside Project will be arranging guided riverside walks from the Tilbury Riverside Arts & Activity Centre adjoining the Cruise Terminal and there will be refreshments, cream teas and entertainment by local community groups throughout the day.

To assist the local community in travel arrangements to the Terminal, the 99 bus service will be operating a Saturday service on both Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday 15th June is Father’s Day so why not bring your dad along to reminisce?
